"The view of Franciszek
Piper, the head of the historical research
department at the Auschwitz-Birkenau State
Museum, is that about one million Jews died
in Auschwitz, corresponding to 90 per cent
of the total number of victims; of the rest,
at least 75,000 were ethnic Poles, almost
21,000 were Gypsies, about 15,000 were Soviet
prisoners of war, and between 10,000 and
15,000 were people of other nationalities.
The identity and the exact numbers of all
the victims will probably never be known
for sure; still today they are subject to
some disagreement, even among leading professional
historians."
